Latin America

With more than 35 years of experience representing clients in Latin America, Thompson & Knight's commitment to its Latin American practice is unsurpassed. Our attorneys and resources range from areas such as Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela, Peru, Bolivia, Uruguay, Ecuador, Argentina, and Nicaragua, and our attorneys work in all of the business languages of Latin America. We have many experienced attorneys fluent in Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and French, including natives of Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Colombia, and Argentina. The local presence and experience offered by our attorneys reflects the commitment of Thompson & Knight to provide the full range of legal services to our clients.

In addition, the Firm's practice in Latin America extends beyond the borders of the region to represent those companies wishing to conduct business transactions around the globe. For example, our Latin American attorneys have advised clients in South Africa, Gabon, Angola, Senegal, Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea, Algeria, Niger, China, and the United Kingdom.

Our strategic growth has provided nonpareil strength in the Latin American market in the areas of mergers and acquisitions, project and private finance, infrastructure projects securitization, energy, LNG, and capital markets transactions. This growth is part of our accelerating strategy to make these services available globally in a highly interdependent world economy.

Our offices in Monterrey and Mexico City counsel U.S., Mexican, and international clients currently doing business, or considering doing business, in Mexico and elsewhere in Latin America. We provide U.S. and Mexican legal counsel in diverse commercial transactions and matters. Clients served range from individuals to multinational conglomerates and host governments and include financial institutions, manufacturers and distributors of industrial goods, manufacturers and distributors of food and beverage products, offshore oil and gas drilling services, real estate development companies, and entities in the agriculture, energy, construction, telecommunication, transportation, and retail sectors. Because trans-border commercial operations often involve immigration, employment, and labor issues, we have extensive experience with maquiladora facilities and all relevant union, non-union, employer, and employee relationships. Our attorneys also guide clients through the complicated maze of federal and state employment and tax laws and treaties, and regularly defend employers against every form of employment-related claim, dispute, and lawsuit.Additionally, many of Thompson & Knight's attorneys in Mexico served in the legal departments of major U.S., Mexican, and multinational companies before joining us, including such companies as Protexa, Vitro, and FEMSA.

Our recent expansion to New York has provided nonpareil strength in the Latin American markets in the areas of M&A, project and private finance, securitization, and capital markets. This growth is part of our accelerating strategy to make these services globally in an increasingly independent world economy.

Our U.S. and Mexico attorneys are accustomed to helping clients understand and succeed in foreign legal systems and business cultures. Our attorneys are also accustomed to working together as an integrated client service team to provide coordinated cross-border legal advice. Through many years of working together, we have developed the internal communication tools and shared client focus necessary to serve our clients efficiently.

Thompson & Knight has always been a client-centered, results-oriented law firm that prides itself on its ability to reach creative, thoughtful, and effective business and legal solutions. We are proud of the ability of our lawyers to listen and be responsive to the needs and goals of our clients and to make a positive impact on the people and communities we serve.
