Climate Change & Renewable Energy

In response to the challenges and opportunities that growing climate change concerns and regulation of greenhouse gas emissions present to business, Thompson & Knight developed a Climate Change and Renewable Energy Practice Group. Drawing on its collaborative culture and broad experience in environmental regulation and emissions trading, project development, finance, and national and international energy practices, the Firm assembled a multi-practice group of attorneys to provide the broad array of services required to advise clients in climate change regulation and renewable energy.

Our attorneys have the capability to assist clients in developing business opportunities in greenhouse gas emission reduction credit (or "carbon credit") projects and carbon credit trading markets, and the growing demand for renewable energy produced from such technologies as wind, solar, and biofuels.

The Climate Change and Renewable Energy Practice Group is global, engaging Thompson & Knight's attorneys in Mexico, Algeria, and the UK as well as applying the Firm's experience in the global energy industry. The Firm will combine this long-term experience with its more recent work in renewable energy, such as wind energy, biofuels (such as ethanol and biodiesel), and landfill gas capture and burning to produce electricity. The Firm's experience in oil and gas matters and oil recovery enhancement through various techniques, including carbon dioxide injection, creates an experience base to advise clients in carbon capture and storage, by which carbon dioxide would be captured from such emission sources as power plants and refineries and injected to either enhance oil recovery or to store carbon dioxide in geological formations deep underground.
